Moldavite, Chlum

Moldavite has 9.85 g and 4.3 x 3.5 x 1 cm

Moldavites are tektites that formed after the impact of a meteorite in Bavaria 14,800,000 years ago, and are found only in our territory – only a few pieces were found outside the Czech Republic (near the impact of this meteorite).

The asteroid, about 1 km in size, flew at a very oblique angle and formed a roughly 25 km large Ries Kessel crater, in which the town of Nördlingen was built millions of years later. Before the impact, the asteroid disintegrated into smaller parts, creating a Steinheim crater with a diameter of about 4 km at a distance of 30 km from the main crater.

Subsequent energy transfer caused the melting of the surrounding rocks and their ejection into the upper atmosphere, where they were vitrified and subsequently solidified and impacted on the territory of southern Bohemia and the Moravian part of the Bohemian-Moravian Highlands.

It is completely unique in the world and such green tektites are practically not found anywhere else on Earth. The name tektite comes from the Greek “tektos” ie “melted”.

Description

Moldavite,
the famous Czech “gem” that fell to us from the sky 🌠
From a geological point of view, it belongs to the group of tektites, natural glasses. The Greek term tektós means “molten or melted”.
Glass is a melting product that has been cooled to a solid phase without crystallization. It is an amorphous solid without regular arrangement. The glassy appearance is created by a smooth transition from the liquid to the solid-state.
One theory is that tektites formed by hitting a body from space – an asteroid that blew up a mass of Earth’s surface layers when it hit Earth.
The enormous energy of the impact at a speed of approximately 11 km / s caused the melting and evaporation of the target rocks and led to the ejection of part of the mass into the upper atmosphere and partly into space.
The Ries near Stuttgart in Germany is considered to be the impact crater of tektites in the Central European fall field of moldavites.
Its age, corresponding to the age of moldavites, has been calculated at 14.7 million years.
The second theory is that moldavites formed on the moon and landed on Earth as meteorites.
Thanks to its mysterious origin, it is popular with collectors and esoterics, who attribute it to the extraterrestrial origin and other attributes associated with it. Moldavites were described almost 250 years ago from the Vltava basin.
They were already used by people in the Neolithic for decorating and making tools.
